For thousands of years the standard for directional guidance has been the magnetic compass. For centuries the method for celestial navigation has been the sextant and charts. Today we have Global Positioning Systems with satelites and computers for navigation. There are very accurate navigational methods in this modern time. However the back-up is still the sextant and charts, and the standard for directional guidance is still the magnetic compass.
Antique nautical devices can be collected for a hobby or they can actually be back ups for global positioning systems. Some nautical antiques are mostly for show, but many have been precision made to give acurate directions. The fine craftmanship of these antique nautical divices will add style and refinement to any home or business.
The Solar Compass uses the position of the sun to give the user an acurate direction. The solar compass does not replace the magnetic compass, sextant, or gps, instead it adds to the capabilities already in use and acts as a back up. The solar compass instantly tells the user the direction the solar compass is pointing. Since the solar compass is instantaneous it can also easily show the change in direction simply by observing the solar compass as the user moves. Obviously now that we have all these incredible navigation devises and a place to talk about them there is only one thing left to do, and that is design a compass course. If you were a scout when you were a kid then you have probably had the oportunity to do a compass course. If you were lucky you might have even designed or help design a compass course. The compass course page has a sample compass course that was actually used to test the capabilities of a solar compass verses a magnetic compass.
